ProfitBite is an ongoing project which has involved the development of a brand, the production of a marketing website and the implementation of two complex pieces of bespoke software in different programming languages.

ProfitBite enables web publishers (bloggers, forum owners, web masters) to generate revenue from their websites via affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is a channel used by retailers to promote their products and services, and works by paying a commission to a sale generated by a third-party website. These third-parties are better known as ‘publishers’ and connect with retailers through ‘affiliate networks’.

The ProfitBite service integrates accounts from multiple affiliate networks into a single simple solution, enabling even the least technically able publishers to benefit from becoming an affiliate to some of the biggest names in retail.

This development project has involved development in Ruby on Rails and PHP, both interacting via a shared MySQL database. The software features lots of bespoke coding including custom import scripts for dealing with a large volume of merchant, network and transaction data, a novel solution for categorising merchants automatically, a referral system and separate control panels for three types of front-end user – publishers, networks and merchants.
